My Grandmother

was as slight as they came, all four-
feet-eleven-and-a-half inches of her, and
yes, she demanded that last half inch,
so we’d playfully give it to her.

It’s easy, we’d mischievously prod her on,
Take a deep breath and say it!

Stamp you feet, clench your fists
if you have to. But trust us, you’ll feel so much
better— no other word will do, grandma.

I think the closest she ever came to saying it,
to actually exhaling the almighty, Fuck!

was when she’d whispered to me, in all her godliness,
it must have been around the airplay of “Like a Virgin,”

That Madonna’s a slut, you know, dear.

The Day Relays Itself

The day relays itself with ease.
A quiescent afternoon wearing rain clouds
that squeeze out droplets, one moment
at a time.

One son gathers letters, documentation
for an arts and technology college,
sets these aside for an evening at
his girlfriend’s jazz dance recital.

The other, seeks solace with his girlfriend
also, bringing books and adolescent trepidations
back to her family’s for dinner, later a ride
home. They each will sleep tonight, all

dreams a curvature of innocence, all
dreams exceeding child-like design.
